eCommerce UK trend news reveals that online retail sustained its double-digit growth in 2016. The online purchases realised a year-on-year rise of 11% in April, however, growth has ‘taken its foot off the pedal’, new research has claimed.

This year’s sales were thought to have been slightly hindered due to the fact that Easter fell earlier this year, in March.

As we mentioned previously, annual growth for clothing was 15%, footwear claimed an 18% growth, while lingerie saw a significant 32% increase, annually.

Quality eCommerce figures have been produced thanks to clothing/apparel prevalence (15% growth), with increases reportedly being pushed on by the continued consumer hunger for accessories and footwear (25% and 19% growth, respectively). Furthermore, lingerie proved to be the highest performer, recording a 32% year-on-year rise.

Additionally, the gift sector gained a growth of 16% year-on-year, with home and garden sales stepping up by 13% too.

A retail expert at IMGR, a leading e-retail UK company, said: “The growth in April was probably slightly ahead of where we may have anticipated given the cold weather, with a number of sectors outperforming the total market, including apparel where sales growth was up +15%. Year-to-date, overall e-retail growth is actually 2% ahead of our 11% growth forecast for 2016.
“A definite trend we have been recording so far this year is the displacement of sales from tablet devices – with sales growth just +3% through these devices – over to smartphones, where sales continue to be very strong. Larger mobile screens and better-optimised sites seem to be working to increase confidence in using these devices for a wide range of activities.”
