Before I start telling you how amazing working for Media Lounge has been so far… I want to share with you the journey of how I got here! So, like many of you out there, I went to University and got a good grade, and like many of you, I wanted to get a job in the field of which my degree specialised! You’ll be surprised to know that my degree is not in Marketing, Media or Advertising but in Music Technology! I know what you’re thinking, how did I end up as a Digital Marketing Executive at Media Lounge? The answer to this question is that I accidentally fell into the wonderful world that is Digital Marketing, and I’m never looking back!

After leaving University, I got my dream job as a Lead Sound Engineer for one of the UK’s top recording studios. Day to day life was to record and mix music, my “dream” job. But dreams and reality are two separate things! After 6 months, I knew that the job wasn’t for me so I left and had no idea what to do next. I ended up working as a Deputy Brand Manager for one of the UK’s top high-street retailers. I found myself wanting to drive the business forward in a variety of ways; one was by implementing various social media and email campaigns to help engage with our customers on a more personal level. Simply by connecting with our customers on a one-to-one level we helped drive the store’s footfall immensely, resulting in a huge increase in our sales. The head office of the company soon recognised our stores success and began to use my ideas throughout the entire company. This was the indication to me that I had a natural talent for Digital Marketing and I decided to dedicate my time to learning more about the subject and eventually to pursue a career in this fantastic industry!

I applied for various Digital Marketing Internships, and was lucky enough to be accepted for a few interviews… but none of these interviews were as unique or memorable as the one I had at Media lounge. I arrived at the front door and was greeted by Marcus (Digital Marketing Manager) and Adam (Company Founder), who told me that meeting space was tight ahead of a planned office move and there were no spare rooms due to the recent growth of the business. Instead, the interview was held in front of the entire team at Media Lounge! So, instead of just trying to impress two people… I was now being subconsciously judged by every member of the team! Needless to say, I was nervous… but I shouldn’t have been as the interview was really relaxed and I felt it had gone smoothly! Both Marcus and Adam were very upbeat, happy people, and I felt that we all had a great rapport. I was then asked to attend a 2nd interview, this time with Marcus and Mike (The Other Company Founder) and it went amazingly! I was under the impression that I had applied for an Internship at Media Lounge, but to my surprise they offered me the position of Digital Marketing Executive! Totally overwhelmed is the biggest understatement of the year! I was super excited to start working alongside this marvellous group of people!
A few days before my first official day at the company, I was invited to join Marcus at Silicon Beach, a yearly event held in Bournemouth. It was a full day that consisted of listening to insightful keynotes and stuffing my face full of coffee and cakes – The perfect combo! Being surrounded by some of the industry’s top dogs and rising stars made me realise that I had finally found the right career for me and I was relishing every moment of it! If you are interested in Digital Marketing, I highly recommend you go to next year’s Silicon Beach!
So, the big day had arrived – My first day at Media Lounge. I was buzzing! I walked into the office aka ‘The Thunderdome’ , where I was introduced to the entire team (who are a top bunch of guys and gals) and shown my new desk / work area! On my desk was a welcome basket which was overflowing with gifts that were tailored personally to me; I am an Arsenal supporter… so in the basket was a lovely red Arsenal mug (to Marcus’ disgust as he is a Tottenham fan). I am obsessed with Super Mario, so they had got me a Bowser desk mascot too but my favourite gift was a hardback copy of Gary Vaynerchuk’s Jab Jab Jab Right Hook which had a welcome message written inside from Marcus! I was honestly speechless and just remembering this moment brings a big smile to my face! This small gesture from Media Lounge showed me how much they look after and care about their staff, or as they like to call us, their family! I knew Media Lounge was a going to be a fantastic place to work!
On the whole, the first week was brilliant. From the get go I was encouraged to get involved by assisting the other members of the Marketing team (the lovely Livi & Grace). By working alongside them, not only did I learn about how the department runs, but I also began forming great relationships with the team. While working through my weekly tasks, something tragic happened… I had accidentally installed a virus on my computer! Thats right, under a week into my new job and I have almost broken a computer – fail springs to mind! This is where I was quickly introduced to the “Fine System” – a chart that keeps track of all staffs personal fails while at the workplace! Since that moment of shame, I have continued on a downward spiral of failures accumulating 9 more fines! Luckily, the computer was easily fixed and all was forgiven, but I was already 10 fines deep! Bad times! At the end of a great first week, I was given a round of applause by all the staff to say well done for making a good start! This tiny act of kindness was such a lovely gesture, and it really made me feel like I was one of the team!

In a nutshell – Media Lounge is a fantastic company to be a part of and I feel blessed to have been given this opportunity! Hopefully, I will be writing a follow up to this blog entry in a years time, where I can tell you all about the amazing, fun-filled, wacky adventures that took place at over the following 365 days here at Media Lounge!

Ciao for now
