Okay, so you have a website. Well done you. We’re in awe. But we both know that just showing up online isn’t going to be enough to get your eCommerce conversion rates where they need to be.

When you look at your eCommerce competition you might wonder how on earth you can turn your basic Magento store into a major league player. Fortunately, there are plenty of tools to help you, and once you have the basic know-how you’ll be equipped to get your sales figures building and your brand message noticed. Here are some pointers.

Start by visiting your own Magento site as if you were any member of the public. Better still, get a trusted friend with a brutal sense of honesty to do it for you. That way you’ll find out what’s really going on in the heads of your visitors. Chances are they’ll pick you up on things like, whether your Magento site works well on their mobile device, and whether it’s as usable as major sites like Amazon. Fortunately, it’s not too difficult to rectify these problems with a bit of technical input. They’ll probably also notice whether your images are fantastic or like, meh. Professional-standard photography with decent clarity, placement and a human dimension is a must to get people relating instinctively to your product.

Something your honest friend might not pick up on is the trust element. They already know who you are, so they already know for sure whether or not you’re some dodgy backroom setup or a plausible business enterprise. For the sake of everyone else, including contact details such as an address and secure purchasing to communicate that extra element of security and trust.

Use analytics to find out what’s happening in your visitors’ heads. Search boxes are a great way to get people interacting and they’ll show you what people are really looking for when they’re not just passively surfing your site.  Find out at what point people who fail to convert leave your domain. Ideally, you want to funnel them through the eCommerce sales journey so that they arrive safe and sound the other side of the checkout with products in tow. Conversions make everyone happy.
