Smartphones Now Primary Source For US mCommerce Retail Sales

Mobile commerce, as we have reported on several occasions, saw a notable breakthrough year in 2015, globally. The retail sales through smartphone mcommerce alone in the US almost doubled, thanks largely to improved buying experiences, bigger screens, and heightened mobile search.

The rise in trends for smartphone mcommerce is anticipated to continue as we carry on through 2016, reports suggest.

US retail mcommerce sales have been estimated to achieve a notable $123.13 billion in 2016, realising a 39.1% increase on last year’s results, not to mention that figures will be more than double those from 2014 mcommerce.

However, tablets do still hold the trump card in terms of retaining the majority of mcommerce sales, but there’s very little in it, 0.6% in 2016 in fact. Research has suggested that, although growth rate for tablets will remain steady at around 30.7%, this figure will not be robust enough to stay in line with the more prevalent growth of smartphone mcommerce. It’s forecasted that, by the end of next year, America’s smartphones will account for 50% of every mcommerce retail sale, therefore exceeding that of tablets for the very first time.

Marissa Tarleton, CMO of North America at digital coupon marketplace RetailMeNot said: “Tablets are still growing but at a lesser extent than we’ve seen in the past.”She went on to add: “As we partner with our retailers, we’re optimizing for smartphones.”

It’s fair to say that this trend could well be heading our way shortly, as it does with most things in the US, so now is the best time to have a Magento agency making sure your mcommerce is optimised for site to encourage increased sales in the future.
