UK Boasts Being eCommerce Capital Of The EU

We told you eCommerce was the place to be, and this has been cemented by the fact that UK consumers, when compared to any other EU country, are more likely to do their shopping online!

A significant number, four in five, of people living in Britain are reported to have made a purchase online in the last 12 months, recent eCommerce figures available via the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have revealed. These figures, therefore, place us in the top spot out of all of the EU countries, exceeding the average at 50%.

Our blatant affection for making those online purchases is shared with the Scandinavian countries, Germany and Holland, with those countries all recording more than 70% of consumers making e-purchases.

On the other end of the scale, Romania and Bulgaria were stated as the EU’s lowest online shoppers, with just 10% and 17% of the population respectively acquiring any purchases through eCommerce or mCommerce in 2014.

Furthermore, eCommerce sales in the UK have rocketed a staggering 66% in a 5-year period between 2008 and 2013, recent figures show.

What seems to be aiding the online shopping takeover, experts suggest, is the fact that the line between online and offline shopping seems to be starting to blur, with eCommerce collection and packaging hubs becoming one of the fastest growing sectors opening shops on high streets up and down the UK.
