New research from PayPal has highlighted the positive news that the UK is the world’s third most popular shopping destination for international online shoppers, with an estimated 86.4m of them from 29 countries involved in the survey making purchases from the UK in the last 12 months.

The main appeal of UK products was the allure of variety, quality and authenticity available on British websites.

While the recognised growth markets of eCommerce mega-players China, USA, along with France and Germany remain at the forefront of ‘buying British’, the research also points out that Nigeria and India are somewhat unlikely new areas of opportunity for the nation’s businesses. Over the past 12 months, a projected 5.8m Nigerians, as well as 4.9m Indians, made purchases from the UK, which places them in the 5th and 6th spots in the list of online buyers of British goods.

Among the UK’s top four online export markets, desktop computers continue to be the consumers’ preferred mode for internet access. Nevertheless, smartphones, as we have reported recently, are rapidly narrowing the gap, indicating the growing importance of mCommerce for the nation’s businesses. This is highlighted by the fact that a resounding 86% of Chinese online shoppers now say their purchases are made via a mobile device, with 83% of cross-border shoppers using their smartphone to purchase overseas.

PayPal’s report has raised the need for businesses to really consider being on top of their game in order to capitalise on the popularity of British eCommerce around the world, so now’s the best time to consider Magento web design as your platform.
