It’s just a bit too obvious to say eCommerce is booming. We know that just about everyone does their shopping online. eCommerce is all around us, and we can guess what’s happening in the industry, the demographics and the trends, from common sense. But what do that stats say?

The Global eCommerce Report 2017 which was carried out by the eCommerce Foundation offers some research centred on Europe (the UK, as well as France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Turkey and Russia) to cuts through the guesswork. It’s a poll that records things like the perception of logistics, efficiency and ease in all areas of eCommerce startup and operation, as well as customer uptake of online shopping, and the related trends.) And the bottom line is that eCommerce looks to continue growing, with an increase of around 19% by the end of this year. Good news.

Breaking down the figures, we get to see a few further insights.

The UK is second only to Germany in terms of ease of working with e.g. customs and infrastructure. Russia comes in last place. But when it comes to how easy it is to run an eCommerce business in each country worldwide, the UK finds itself in 7th place, while Germany ranks at 17th.

In global terms, at 80.5%, Europe’s internet use is the highest, and this compares with just over 46% in Asia Pacific (which includes countries like India and Indonesia, where extremely low internet penetration rates lower the percentage considerably). The findings from this research tell us that the UK has the highest rate of internet penetration – nearly 98%.

If you’re wondering where eCommerce is growing the fastest, the answer is Australia, with Turkey and Spain following close behind.

Basically, if you’re working in eCommerce, especially in the UK, the news is good. More and more people are shopping online, and more and more online retailers are finding success in eCommerce business. This is prime time to get your online store optimised and ready for future growth. If you need any help with that, just get in touch and we’ll give you all the advice and support you need.
