The eCommerce sector is positively thriving at present and this couldn’t be advocated more so, it would seem, than in the results of the number of female e-commerce entrepreneurs in the UK. Our female moguls have the fastest growing entrepreneurial scene in the whole of Europe, in fact.
Currently, we’re seeing a 28 per cent rise in the last five years between 2009 and 2014 when compared to 17 per cent in France, 5 per cent in Italy and less than 2 per cent in Germany.
The study was conducted by eBay using government data, which also cited that the number of UK female entrepreneurs in online retail has developed at a faster rate than that of their male e-commerce entrepreneurial counterparts; which only increased by 10% over the same amount of time.
According to the research, female entrepreneurs are “smashing the glass ceiling” with female-founded e-commerce firms generating stable jobs. Ten per cent of female-founded eCommerce businesses has employees compared with the 2 per cent of those e-commerce businesses founded by men.
Tanya Lawler, eBay UK CEO, said:
“We’re seeing more and more women set up successful enterprises, and for all the talk of a glass ceiling, Britain is actually a nation of self-made women.
“Our research with Development Economics has now verified the strides that businesswomen are making in the small and medium enterprise space, and quantified their valuable economic contribution.”
