Google Trialling New Tech Will Allow You To Pay Using Your Face

Our Magento web design UK team were fascinated by the news that Google is currently trialling their new technology that would allow people to buy things, literally using their face!

As opposed to taking your phone out of your pocket, you instead make the payment hands-free, via facial recognition that will authorise your transaction.

Pali Bhat, Google product manager, said: “Imagine if you could rush through a drive-thru without reaching for your wallet, or pick up a hot dog at the ballpark without fumbling to pass coins or your credit card to the cashier.

“This prompted us to build a pilot app called Hands Free that we’re now in the early stages of testing.”

At present, there are a handful of Silicon Valley food outlets in California who are involved in the trial, such as McDonald’s and Papa John’s.

It works by way of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi detecting when a customer has the Hands Free payment technology supported on their phone.

When it comes to paying, it’s simply a case of telling the cashier: “I’ll pay with Google.”

Just to sure things up in terms of security, the cashier will then ask for the person’s initials, and then uses the Hands-Free profile picture that pops up on their terminal to sanction the payment.

Google has also revealed that they are testing other avenues, such as additionally experimenting with using cameras in stores, which would allow customers to pay for things without needing the authorisation of a cashier.

Mr Bhat said: “At select stores, we’re also in the early stages of experimenting with visual identification so that you can breeze through checkout even faster.

“This process uses an in-store camera to automatically confirm your identity based on your Hands-Free profile picture.

“All images captured by the Hands-Free camera are deleted immediately.”

We’ll be sure to try and keep you posted on updates as and when they happen.
