This is no satirical piece from the team here at Media Lounge, it’s true when we say that numbers released recently by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have revealed a rise in the number of pensioners who are taking advantage of various social media platforms.
As many as one in 7 people who are 65 and over have declared they use either Twitter or Facebook and what’s more, in the three years since 2012, the amount of people over the age of 55 doing the same has more than doubled!
A staggering 92% of people 25 and under are active on social media, so at the moment, as you would expect, the youngsters are leading the way, but the older generation is certainly catching them up!
As we all know, using social media is a wonderful avenue for people of all ages to stay connected, from all corners of the globe.
Additionally, Saga, a company who specialise in providing an array of services and products specifically to people aged 50, and over, conducted a study of their own, looking into these numbers, in which they found that 60% of older people revealed that would be unable to cope without access to the world wide web, with 40% saying they take advantage of internet access in order to manage their day-to-day lives.
Further research discovered that an increasing number of people of a certain age are starting to make use of tablet devices, mainly because of the ease of use and portable capabilities. We all know how convenient they are for carrying around the house etc.
