We often get bogged down with jargon in the world of Magento eCommerce, and if you are a beginner or trying to keep up in a conversation with people who are used to this sort of thing then it can be no fun whatsoever. But fear not, with Media Lounge’s new two-part feature this can be a thing of the past! So, without further ado, here’s our simple guide to understanding all the jargon you’ll need to know to get down with the eCommerce kids!
Domain Name
Your domain name is an essential element for allowing people to discover your website. You really want to try to involve some popular Keywords for your industry in the domain name. An example of a domain name is medialounge.co.uk.
URL
URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator: this is an exclusive and unique address for every file that exists on the internet. You’ll find this on the address that appears in your address bar on your browser when you load up a website page. For example, https://www.twitter.com/.
Keywords
Keywords are the words or phrases you and other people type into search engines to find things.
CPC
CPC stands for Cost Per Click. This acts as an avenue for online advertising where you set a certain amount of money you’re prepared to pay each time an online user clicks on your advert. Basically, it works as an auction, so the bigger your bid, the higher up your advert will be seen in relevant search results.
AdWords
AdWords is an online advertising tool used by Google. It works by bidding, like how people do on eBay, for the maximum CPC (see above) that you’re prepared to pay for a link back to your website to be seen adjacent to someone’s search results for your selected Keyword.
Analytics
This is another tool you can use from Google. Analytics gives you access to track the visitor activity, the number of unique page views, and successful conversion rates your website has achieved over a specific amount of time.
IP Address
This stands for Internet Protocol Address: Each and every computer that is connected to the internet is subsequently identified using this exclusive number referred to as an IP Address.
DNS
DNS is short for Domain Name Server/Domain Name System: This provides an online service that is capable of translating domain names into IP addresses. To understand this better, it means it would take www.medialounge.co.uk and translate this domain to an IP address of 192.867.753.1 (this isn’t the actual IP address), due to the fact that the internet works on IP addresses.
CMS
Here we have your Content Management System. A CMS is a form of software that provides the user with the ability to edit and publish content on their website without the worry of needing to access and change any complicated coding.
HTML
This is short for Hypertext Markup Language. This is used for standard coding, or programming, language that is used to make web pages work on the internet. These are used to convert information from databases into HTML so they appear on a web page and to add interactive elements to web pages amongst other things.
- PHP (Hypertext Pre-processor)
- ASP (Active Server Page)
- JavaScript
*These are three other forms of common programming languages that are frequently used.
Hosting
When talking about hosting, it refers to the process of storing website pages and other data on another computer (web server). This is so they can be accessed via the Internet.
HTTP
HyperText Transfer Protocol is the full meaning of how data is transferred from a server to an active web browser.
